October

October 1, 2016

I went to the Octoberfest with my friends that was held at the Montrose. The rides were fun and I had a great time and went home at 10:30p.m.

The class gathered into the groups for to continue working on the bridge challenge. Our team had to think a lot to come up with a perfect material that will be able to keep its form but easy to build. Jenga blocks are one of the material that we came up with however, it is hard to create an arch with the edges that it has on.

October 4, 2016

I downloaded the presentation template file for the arch bridge challenge. Instead of using power point, I decided to go with the photoshop and edit the slides. After discussing more abut the material to use, we came up with the idea of using raw potatoes as the keystone. It is shapable, can be cut into same unit blocks, and easy to get it with a cheap price.

October 5, 2016

Our team tried stacking up the potatoes into an arch bridge. It worked out, but the width was too narrow to keep the bridge standable.

October 6, 2016

Today was the competition day, we stacked up the material to build the arch bridge.

The result and the score for the arch bridge competition came out. The winner's team had a score of 9.1, it was made out of erasers, cut into shapes of keystone blocks. The eraser had better grip than other materials.

We watched a video, Cynmatics: Science Vs. Music by nigel stanford. Then, the class reviewed sketch up by making another jenga block. We also learned a new skill using the move tool. First, we copy and paste the jenga blocks that we have already made. Using the move tool, clcik on the vertex of the block and move it to the point where I want to put the block.

We started class watching a video about a cheetah robot. It has a laser distancer that allows it when to calculate and jump over the obstacles. We practiced using the move tool with the sketch up tool. Dr. Neat had taught us how to make semi-circle corners.

This week's Wednesday Challenge was to build a card house using deck of cards. Glues and bending cards are not allowed when building the house. Instead of four people in each team, we divided the teams into three members each.

The score of the yesterday's WC came out. Our group won the challenge with the score of 13.5. We designed the model of a card using sketch up.

The vacume invention for the JPL challenge has a pipe connected to the vacume. It sucks up the water and the fish, drops it at the other end. The main problem is that the joints of the pipes results the fish to get stuck between while it is sucking up. The struggle of this year's JPL challenge is the rules are more strict with the challenge given.

October 17, 2016

The class started making a sketch up model of a pencil. To make a pencil, I had start with the base, which is a hexagon using the polygon tool. With push and pull tool, input the height of a pencil. It is important to make it as a component because the parts move independently.

October 18, 2016

We continued with what we have not finished during the week. Dr. Neat gave us time to make sure images of pencil, stairway to heaven, and the card made by sketch up were all on the website to get graded by end of this week.

♥Happy Birthday to me♥

The Wednesday Challenge was to make a 90 degree right triangle as a group. We can form our own groups and it does not matter how much people are in each group.

October 20, 2016

Our group had finished making the 90 degree right triangle with the straws and tapes. Our strategy was to get a model of a 45-45-90 triangle model and surround the straws to it so we wouldn't have to worry about the angle measure.

Mr.Miller had graded our websites over the weekend. He had also showed the results of how the teams have done on their triangles.

I started with a new sketch up project given by Dr. Neat to make a model of a lego block. It is measured by 2.5-1.25-0.75 inches.

October 26, 2016

The class was given with a Wednesday Challenge in groups of three to estimate how many candy corns will be needed to fill 8.5 inches by inches paper. Most teams had the similar way of estimating the candy corns by measuing the dimensions of the candy corns and mutiplying the number of candy corns measured on the width of the paper to the length.

I had to go inside of the shop and took the safety couse assignment test which was about writing a brief essay how to be prepared, be aware, and be clean.

Most of the JPL challenge groups have finished putting the materials together and assembling some other parts. After putting the parts together, they would be able to test the final products. Mr. Wilton has commented that Kelvin's machine will spill a lot of water if they continue doing it the way they are working on. The vacume machine has been improved by having a wood blcok set to hold the pipe making sure that it has been stable to the cup. However, the vacume cannnot suck up the water by the wrong slope of the pipe and the holder. Arm machine is completely built.

Halloween. Dr. Neat showed us a video of the Tacoma Narrows that had been crashed. It started to colloaspe due to the wind speed increasing and vibrating. We had a introduction of what we will have to do with our bridge report. Templete is provided to work on the presentations.
